Externship position

The American Institute for Cognitive Therapy (AICT) will begin accepting applications for our Externship position starting January 15, 2008 (following PSYDNYS Guidelines) and in December for our Post-Doctoral position . The deadline to submit all application materials is February 1, 2008. Applications received after this date, will not be considered for the positions. A completed application should consist of a Curriculum Vita, Cover Letter, and 2-3 Recommendation Letters. Postdoctoral Fellow: Fall 2008

The American Institute for Cognitive Therapy is planning on hiring a non-licensed postdoctoral Fellow. Position to begin in Fall 2008. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in clinical services and be able to relate well to highly sophisticated patients. The Postdoctoral Fellow will receive intensive training in CBT by a highly skilled staff. We are a leading cognitive therapy Institute, directed by Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D., with an intellectually and clinically active staff in New York City. Our staff represents expertise in a number of critical areas and approaches---- affective and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, worry, bipolar disorder, borderline personality, child and adolescent, DBT, mindfulness, acceptance, and emotional regulation issues. Several staff are involved in co-authoring books in cognitive therapy with Dr. Leahy. Dr. Leahy is the President of the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy, President-Elect of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Weill-Cornell Medical College. We have been providing services and training since 1985 and many of our staff also teach and supervise in doctoral clinical programs and medical schools in the area.

Our Institute provides services for a variety of patients, including children, adolescents, and adults. Our staff of eight therapists have strengths in the following treatment areas: Depression, Anxiety (GAD,OCD, Panic, Health Anxiety, Social Phobia), Bipolar Disorder, Personality Disorders, Marital and Family Therapy, Eating Disorders, Impulse Control Disorders, and the full range of Child and Adolescent Disorders. Currently, the Institute holds one case conference each week, provides workshops, and provides trainees with individual supervision. Staff members participate in supervision, case conferences, workshops, research projects and provide clinical services.

We have been training clinicians in cognitive therapy since 1985. The director of the Institute, Dr. Robert Leahy, is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy, the President of the International Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy,and the President-Elect of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. He serves on the executive committees of the International Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy, the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and the Scientific Advisory Committee of NAMI. Dr. Leahy is Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the Weill-Cornell University Medical College.

Dr. Leahy's recent books include Cognitive Therapy: Basic Principles and Applications, Practicing Cognitive Therapy, Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders, Overcoming Resistance in Cognitive Therapy, Bipolar Disorder: A Cognitive Therapy Approach (with Newman, Beck, Reilly-Harrington and Gyulai), Clinical Advances in Cognitive Psychotherapy (edited with Dowd), Psychology and the Economic Mind, Techniques in Cognitive Therapy, Bipolar Disorder: Psychosocial Approaches to Treatment (ed. w. S. Johnson), and Roadblocks in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. His popular audience book, The Worry Cure, has been critically acclaimed and is being translated into nine languages. In January 2007 he and Paul Gilbert in the United Kingdom will publish, The Therapeutic Relationship in the Cognitive Behavioral Therapies.

Externship Description

Please send in your application for Fall 2008
If you are interested in training, please see our weekend workshops this spring.

Externs begin each year in the summer of fall. The externship is a practicum experience that involves a commitment of 15 hours/week at the Institute, seeing nine patients, and receiving individual supervision from a licensed psychologist on the staff. A knowledge of cognitive-behavioral therapy and a commitment to the highest standards of clinical practice are required. You must be enrolled in an APA-approved doctoral program. Externs can participate in weekly case conferences and peer supervision and will have access to an extensive library of audio and video tapes on cognitive-behavioral therapy. Applications (in the form of a cover letter and CV) are accepted on a rolling basis.
